Python Intermediate 1

Functions, scope, lambda, comprehensions, time, the turtle and classes — with games, drawings and a calculator to build.

A 15-session trainer-led course authored from Little Inventors' Python Intermediate 1 classes. Functions and scope, lambda and comprehensions, time and dates, turtle shapes, patterns and a whole scene, classes and objects — and five projects: a games arcade, a calculator, hangman, a revision set and tic-tac-toe with a computer opponent. The tkinter lessons from class are console and turtle programs here, with the window versions as take-home pages.

What you’ll build and learn

A child who writes functions with parameters, defaults and return values, uses lambda with sorted, filter and map, writes comprehensions, works with time and dates, draws with the turtle from functions and loops, defines classes with methods and a child class — and has built five complete programs.

Sessions

Course Outline

Functions
Defining a function with def, calling it, parameters and arguments, return versus print, and reusing one piece of code many times.
45 min
Functions with Choices
Default values, keyword arguments, returning more than one value, docstrings, and a function that calls itself.
45 min
Names and Scope
A variable is a name for a value, local and global scope, why a function cannot change a global by accident, the global keyword, and functions as values.
45 min
Lambda and the Built-ins
One-line lambda functions, and the built-ins that take a function: sorted with key, map, filter, max and min with key.
45 min
Comprehensions
List comprehensions with an expression and a condition, comprehensions over strings and ranges, dictionary and set comprehensions, and when a plain loop is clearer.
45 min
Project: The Games Arcade
A menu of small games built from functions and random: guess the number, dice duel and rock-paper-scissors, each in its own function, with scores kept across games.
45 min
Time and Dates
The time module: seconds since the epoch, the clock, formatting with strftime and a short sleep; the datetime module: today, a date you build, the gap between two dates with timedelta, and reading a date typed as text with strptime.
45 min
Turtle: Shapes
The turtle module: a pen that walks; forward, left and right; penup and pendown; a square with a loop; any polygon from the turning angle; colours, pen size and filling; a turtle with a name and several turtles.
45 min
Turtle: Patterns
Patterns from repetition: a spiral that grows each step, a colour list cycled with %, a shape repeated with a small turn to make a rosette, circles around a point, and a rainbow from half circles — the class examples, each one a loop and an idea.
45 min
Project: A Turtle Scene
A complete picture built from functions: a filled rectangle and triangle become a house with a roof, a door and windows in a loop, a sun with rays, clouds from circles, and a sky and grass painted first — the hut, building and boat drawings from class, done the tidy way.
45 min
Classes and Objects
A class is a blueprint and an object is one thing made from it: __init__ and self, attributes that belong to each object, methods that use them, a list of objects, a child class that inherits and adds, and getattr/hasattr for looking inside.
45 min
Project: The Calculator
The calculator from class, in the console: read a line like 12 * 7, split it into two numbers and an operator, look the operator up in a dictionary of functions, guard against bad input and dividing by zero, keep a history and let ans reuse the last answer.
45 min
Project: Hangman
The hangman game from class with the turtle drawing the hangman instead of pictures: a secret word from random.choice, the word shown with underscores, a set of guessed letters, a function per body part called in order for each wrong guess, and a game loop that ends in a win or a hanging.
45 min
Revision
The Revision-2 question set from class, worked in the notebook: lambda with sorted, filter and map; list problems — remove every 20, count evens and odds, second largest, join two lists index-wise; comprehension problems; and date problems — yesterday and tomorrow, days between two dates, the weekday of a date.
45 min
Project: Tic-tac-toe
The tic-tac-toe from class: the board as a list of nine, a function to print it, a move that checks the square is free, a winner check over the eight lines, a two-player loop — and then a computer opponent that wins if it can, blocks if it must, and otherwise takes a corner, the centre or an edge.
